Update from Herefordshire Division – Ledbury area for August 2006

dated September 2006

NEW RECRUITS GIVE COMMUNITIES EXTRA

HELP AND SUPPORT

This month we hear about the new Community Support Officers who are joining the division as part of the Local Policing programme being rolled out across the county.

EIGHT NEW Community Support Officers have just joined Herefordshire Division and are already playing their part in bringing re-assurance to local neighbourhoods.

The new recruits – Paul Penman, Jason Merrick, Paul Hunter, Leeanne Marwick, Carol Marsh, Joanna Gilbert and Dave Rowley – started in August, joining the existing team of Community Support Officers at locations across Herefordshire.

The eighth new CSO, Leatte Clarke, will be a familiar face already to some readers, having previously served as a Parish Officer in Ledbury.

CSO’s play a vital role in working with communities to improve quality of life issues, such as anti-social behaviour, and carrying out high-visibility patrols.

They all join the division at an exciting time as the new Local Policing programme is rolled out across Herefordshire. 20 new Local Policing Areas replaced the old beat area system in mid-July. Each has its own dedicated Local Police Officer and in due course there will be at least one Community Support Officer covering each area as well.

The new Local Policing Teams will continue to work alongside and be supported by Response Officers and Special Constables, who work shift patterns to ensure policing 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

West Mercia Constabulary is continuing its recruitment programme for CSO’s,, which will see an extra 301 CSO’s Across the force area by April 2008.

CSO’s work shifts from 8am to 10pm, including weekends. The starting salary is £14,517 plus a shift allowance and weekend working allowance. A uniform, including protective vest, is provided.

Anyone interested in becoming a CSO can find out more by emailing csorecruitment@westmercia.pnn.police.uk or by visiting the recruitment section of the West Mercia Police website, www.westmercia.police.uk or the national police recruitment site, www.policecouldyou.co.uk .

Keeping juries in the picture – the high-tech digital way

Jurors will now find themselves placed at the scene of the crime thanks to new hi-tech systems being introduced at Crown Courts by West Mercia Constabulary.

The force is using the latest technology to enhance its work by investing in its own Multimedia Design Department and in portable screens on which jurors can be shown special presentations.

Multimedia presentations were first used by West Mercia in the high-profile Hilda Murrell murder trial in 2005, enabling jurors to be transported back in time to the 1984-murder scene.

(picture of court room removed by webmaster, see .doc)

As well as giving jurors a clearer understanding of the evidence, the technology saved an estimated three weeks’ court time.

Initially screens were hired, but now West Mercia has purchased its own portable equipment, which can be installed in courts for murder trials and other serious cases. The presentations can include photographs and video, interactive maps, 3D reconstruction’s and 360 degree panoramic views.

The screens can also be used for training purposes and contingency planning for major events.

West Mercia is the first force in the region to purchase the cutting-edge equipment.
