              NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH BULLETIN

                  Week ending 10th - 16th October 2009

Several properties in Storridge were victim to a spate of break-ins and attempted break-ins over the night of 10th/11th October.  In one incident a large quantity of alcohol was stolen from a cellar of business premises.

Two football teams playing at Ledbury Football Club on 10th October had their mobile phones and wallets stolen from the dressing rooms whilst players were absent.  The thieves also removed the trainers of some players.

A vigilant Cradley resident reports being visited by a male driving a recovery van with a crane on the back. The driver described as white, 30’s, dark hair and of plump build asked the resident if he wanted to get rid of an old ‘Merc’ in the back yard.  The resident declined but was suspicious of the male’s presence on his property.  The vehicle in question has a sign “24 hour recovery” painted on the side and displays a Reg of P805PWY.   Although nothing illegal occurred, the Police are very interested in the movements of this vehicle and similar others.  Scrap metal has gone up in value and there is a linked rise in those individuals wishing to purchase old metal, or in other cases, remove metal without the owner’s consent!  Please keep your eye’s and ears open and report any such activity to us.  Well done to that member of the Public who rang us with the information.  If you feel you need a bit of extra advice regarding security please feel free to speak to your Local Policing Team.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Poaching continues to be a problem throughout the area, especially the Woolhope side of the region. Your Local Policing Officer Deb Huggins is dealing with a number of complaints at present, with a view to setting up a co-ordinated effort to deal with the offenders.  Please record any details that you can at the time i.e. Reg No. of vehicles and descriptions of individuals, for reporting to your |Local Policing Team

Please continue to be vigilant and lock your heating oil tank as the colder weather approaches. Have you considered Siren padlocks which emit a loud noise when disturbed?  These can be attached to the locks on your tanks, sheds, gates, handles of quad bikes etc and are a simple way of letting you know someone is tampering with your property.  They are available generally at varying prices, and are also sold locally through Rodways hardware in Ledbury.

HALLOWEEN

Halloween is usually relatively trouble-free for most neighbourhoods, with children visiting their local neighbours in the hope of sweets etc as a treat.  However not everyone welcomes knocks on the door at night, and for some, particularly the elderly, it can be alarming.  To give you the option to deter would-be visitors to the door the Police have provided “No Trick or Treat” flyers, which are available from the front counter of the Police Station or from members of your Local Policing Team.  These are also being distributed around the area to shops and doctors surgeries.  If you can’t locate one, give us a call and we’ll get a flyer to you.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Inspector Bob Barnett, who heads up the Division's Local Policing & Partnership Support Team, believes Neighbourhood Watch has an important role to play in keep our communities safe. "Policing is all about being at the core of every community and understanding the needs of the people. Neighbourhood Watch is just one of the channels that we can use to tap into these local communities."

"Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators are key members of Partners and Communities Together (PACT) initiatives, which enables them to identify issues of concern and have a say in how their particular area is policed. They also help to distribute community safety advice and provide reassurance," he said.

Your own Ledbury Rural Local Policing Team is in the process of setting up Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Much Cowarne/ Moreton Jefferies, Stretton Grandison, and Aylton.

A successful meeting was held at Burley gate Village Hall on Tuesday 13th October, when over 20 members of the public attended to hear a talk on Crime Prevention given by PC Charles Naylor.  Everyone showed a keen interest in getting a NHW Scheme up and running in order to keep the Parishes of Much Cowarne and Moreton Jefferies safe. This has resulted in a substantial part of the areas having a co-ordinator as a NHW contact.  A BIG thank you to mac Henderson of Panksbridge who has kindly volunteered to take on the role of main Co-ordinator for Much Cowarne, and Tony REE who will act as the Main Co-ordinator for Moreton Jefferies.  We couldn’t do it without your help.

RINGMASTER

Ringmaster is now up and running and we are interested in your comments.  To access the web site go to www.herefordshire-community-messaging.org.  This service offers local residents, neighbourhood watch co-ordinators, businesses, farms, schools and partnerships information and alerts about crimes, incidents and events in their local area as well as regular updates and local information from their Local Policing Teams.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD SUSPECT DESCRIPTION?

For results to be as useful as possible to the Police it is vital suspect descriptions are as detailed as possible.  In some cases this is unfortunately not possible, but where extra information can be obtained, we have put together a check list with the aim of assisting everyone in obtaining the most comprehensive descriptions possible. This focuses around the individual and not their clothing.
