The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 19th Anniversary Exhibition at Cradley Village Hall on Saturday, 23rd and Sunday, 24th October 2021.
We did not hold a Preview Evening for members of the Parish Hall Committee and other local dignitaries and friends because sadly the Covid restrictions made it too difficult to arrange.
However, we had our exhibition despite Covid. We all painted something thanks to the encouragement of Margaret White with her monthly Lockdown challenges by e-mail and Margaret Cross managing the Art Group web site where images of paintings were posted. So notwithstanding missing last year’s Anniversary Exhibition we had enough paintings to hold this year’s exhibition. We had nearly 90 visitors over the two days coming to Cradley to see our work; not bad considering all things. There was a continuous happy buzz throughout especially on the Sunday afternoon. No bacon butties though, just tea/coffee and cakes/biscuits provided by members.
The “poll” for “the picture you liked best” again aroused interest among the artists and public alike! As ever, it was not meant to be a vote for the “best picture” but rather the “favourite picture.” Visitors were given a raffle ticket and were asked to write on the back the number of their favourite picture. At the end of the exhibition the tickets were counted. The “contest” was again very close. This year David Partington’s Packhorse Bridge won. There was a three way tie for second place: Wend Britton’s Mabel, Liz Symonds Still Life and Carole MacIntyre’s Hutton-le-Hole. Great stuff! Well done, all of you!
We had 50 plus pictures on display this year; down on the last exhibition but up on quality! “The standard of work is high” was a repeated comment. As I say each year, it just gets better and better! No sign of it slowing down.
The average attendance at our art sessions is around 12 to 14 – a comfortable and happy roomful. We remain a very friendly and supportive group. A number of newcomers have joined us; fresh blood providing a challenge and a stimulus. Carole is one of the newcomers and is making an impact already! If you would like to join us, you will be made very welcome. Come along to a session at Storridge Village Hall on the 2nd or 4th Wednesdays of the month from 2 – 4 pm and see what fun it is!

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 17th Anniversary Exhibition at Mathon Parish Hall on Saturday, 19th and Sunday, 20th October 2019.
We did not hold a Preview Evening for members of the Parish Hall Committee and other local dignitaries and friends. Instead, as last year, we had an Arty Party on the Saturday evening for the Group members and invited guests from the Parish and outside. Sadly only a few of theguests turned up. (We will have to rethink our policy on invitations for future exhibitions.) Margaret Ainscough served up a marvelous buffet and, with the wine, the party was a great success It was a truly happy occasion – an opportunity to chat and enjoy each other’s company … and the paintings.
This year the weather was so so but that didn’t stop some 130 visitors over the two days coming to Mathon to see our work. There was a continuous happy buzz throughout especially on the Sunday afternoon. Bacon butties were again provided by a roster of members and the cakes came from Margaret Ainscough.
The "poll" for "the picture you liked best" again aroused intrigue and excitement among the artists and public alike! As ever, it was not meant to be a vote for the "best picture" but rather the "favourite picture." Visitors were given a raffle ticket and were asked to write on the back the number of their favourite picture. At the end of the exhibition the tickets were counted. There was a lot of interest and the "contest" was again very close. This year Mary Vivian’s delightful Pond at Castlemorton, a picture in our calendar, won. There was a tie for second place. Joy Perkins’ majestic Prince at Work drew with Barbara Hilton’s Sea Loch, Eribole. Wintry Malverns by David Partington was third. Great stuff! Well done, all of you!
We had 70 plus pictures on display this year. "The standard of work is high" was a repeated comment. As I say each year, it just gets better and better! No sign of it slowing down.
The average attendance at sessions stays at around 12 to 14 – a comfortable and happy roomful. We remain a very friendly and supportive group. Our Sixteenth Anniversary Art Exhibition at Cradley Village Hall brought many visitors (130) to see over seventy paintings by members (16) of the Art Group.
On Saturday evening our Arty Party welcomed guests to view the paintings and have drinks and snacks, and a good time was had by all.
As a group we have had a very successful year both artistically and socially, and we look forward to developing further, inviting artists to give demonstrations, and welcoming more members to the Group in the coming year.
Our invitation to each visitor to select and note down their favourite picture also went ahead as usual, and first place was jointly won by Barbara Hilton with her picture entitled Milford Sound, New Zealand, and Maureen Scott with her picture entitled African Lady, II. Maureen’s painting entitled African Lady I claimed the third place.

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 15th Anniversary Exhibition at Storridge Village Hall on Saturday, 14th and Sunday, 15th October 2017.
On the Friday night there was our usual Preview Evening to which we had invited members of the Parish Hall Committee and other local dignitaries and friends. Wine and nibbles were served and it was a happy occasion – a chance to chat and enjoy each other’s company and the paintings. This year it was well attended by guests and club members. It was a very pleasant evening.
This year the weather was good and we had over 100 visitors over the two days. There was a continual happy buzz throughout. Bacon butties were again provided by a roster of members and the cakes came from Margaret White. This year Joy Perkins "Misty" – an endearing portrait of Misty, a Westie – won. Mary Vivian’s evocative "Walk in the Snow", a picture in our calendar, was second. Diane Poole’s atmospheric "Solva harbour" and Mary Vivian’s (again!) pen and ink drawing of Montreux tied for third place. Great stuff! Well done, all of you!
We had 80 plus pictures on display, a record, I think. "The standard of work is high" was a repeated comment. As I say each year, it just gets better and better! No sign of it slowing down.
The average attendance at sessions stays at around 12 to 14 – a comfortable and happy roomful. We remain a very friendly and supportive group. The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 14th Anniversary Exhibition at Mathon Parish Hall on Saturday, 22nd and Sunday, 23rd October 2016.
On the Friday night there was our usual Preview Evening to which we had invited members of the Parish Hall Committee and other local dignitaries and friends. Wine and nibbles were served and it was a happy occasion – a chance to chat and enjoy each other’s company and the paintings. Disappointingly, it was not as well attended by guests or club members as we would have hoped. Nevertheless it was a very pleasant evening.
This year the weather was good and we had around 160 visitors over the two days. There was a continual happy buzz throughout. Bacon butties were again provided by a roster of members and the cakes came from Margaret White. The "poll" for "the picture you liked best" again aroused intrigue and excitement among the artists and public alike! As before, it was not meant to be a vote for the "best picture" but rather the "favourite picture." Visitors were given a raffle ticket and were asked to write on the back the number of their favourite picture. At the end of the exhibition the tickets were counted. There was a lot of interest and the "contest" was again closely fought. This year Diane Poole’s "Poppies" – a charming picture in her characteristic style of a field of poppies – won. Mary Vivian’s delightful portrait of her dog and Frank Rabin’s winter landscape "Off to Work" tied for second place. A very evenly divided contest showing how good all the paintings were. Well done, all of you!
We had 55 pictures on display, three less than last year. "The standard of work is high" was a repeated comment. As I say each year, it just gets better and better! No sign of it slowing down.
The average attendance at sessions stays at around 12 to 14 – a comfortable and happy roomful. We remain a very friendly and supportive group. The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 13th Anniversary Exhibition at Cradley Village Hall on Saturday, 24th and Sunday, 25th October 2015.
On the Friday night there was our usual Preview Evening to which we had invited members of the Parish Hall Committee, the Rector and other local dignitaries and friends. Wine and nibbles were served and it was a happy occasion – a chance to chat and enjoy each other’s company and the paintings. It was a very pleasant evening. We actually sold a number of paintings, something almost unheard of at previous previews!
This year the weather was good and we had around over 150 visitors. There was a continual happy buzz throughout. This year bacon butties were provided by a roster of members and the cakes came from Margaret White. There was a lot of interest and the "contest" was again closely fought with no outright "winner". This year Maureen Scott’s "Fox in a Dustbin" – a charming picture of a fox scavenging tied with Wendy Britton's Jack at Night, a striking and delightful horses head starkly silhouetted on a black background. Diane Poole and Liz Symonds tied for second place. A very evenly divided contest showing how good all the paintings were. Well done, all of you!
We had 58 pictures on display, three more than last year. "The standard of work is high" was a repeated comment. Like I said last year, it just gets better and better! No sign of it slowing down.
We have held a couple of tutorials/workshops this year and they were enjoyed by all. The weather was kinder and we held outdoor sessions on the non-meeting Wednesdays. The average attendance at sessions stays around 14 – a comfortable and happy roomful. We remain a very friendly and supportive group. A number of newcomers have joined us; fresh blood providing a challenge and a stimulus. If you would like to join us, you will be made very welcome. Come along to a session at Storridge Village Hall on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 2 – 4 pm.

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 12th Anniversary Exhibition at Storridge Village Hall on Saturday, 25th and Sunday, 26th October 2014.
This year the weather was good and we had around an encouraging 170 visitors. There was a continual happy buzz throughout. It was helped along by Bill and Maureen’s bacon sandwiches and Margaret Ainscough’s cakes. At the end of the exhibition the tickets were counted and a "winner" was found. There was a lot of interest and the "contest" was again closely fought. This year Maureen Scott’s Kurdish Chieftain – a marvelously detailed and expressive portrait - got the most votes with Diane Poole’s lovely and colourful collage, The Malverns from Chockbury Lane, second. Barbara Hilton came third again with her charming beach scene, Dervaig Mull. Well done all of you!
This year the refreshments, tea, coffee and cakes and the aforesaid traditional bacon butties, went down well. We had 55 pictures on display, one more than last year. "The standard of work is high" was a repeated comment nevertheless. It just gets better and better!
2014 being the anniversary of the beginning of the First World War the group did another Big Picture. Bill Scott painted moving watercolour depicting symbols of the 3 villages surrounding bright red poppies. This picture was divided into 24 sections and individual members of the group were given a section to paint in acrylics, without conferring, on a canvas which measured 40x50 cm. This meant each artist made their own interpretation of the section (colour, position, etc). They were out of their comfort zone working in a medium strange to most of us. A mighty challenge which has resulted in a huge picture of some 2x3 metres! We hope to display it in Cradley Church this Remembrance week and of course to re-erect it on other suitable occasions annotated with the names of the fallen from the 3 Villages added.
We’ve haven’t held any tutorials this year and that is something to think about for the coming year. The weather was kinder and we held outdoor sessions on the non-meeting Wednesdays. The average attendance at sessions stays around 14 – 15 – a comfortable and happy roomful. We remain a very friendly and supportive group. If you would like to join us, and you will be made very welcome if you do. Come along to a session at Storridge Village Hall on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 2 – 4 pm.

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 11th Anniversary Exhibition at Mathon Parish Hall on Saturday, 12th and Sunday, 13th October 2013.
On the Friday night there was our usual Preview Evening to which we had invited members of the Parish Hall Committee, the Rector and other local dignitaries and friends. Wine and nibbles were served and it was a happy occasion – a chance to chat and enjoy each other’s company. There was a lively buzz and it was a pleasant evening.
This year the weather was not good. In fact it was diabolical. Perhaps that was why the numbers were down on previous years. We had about 80 through the doors over the two days and we were grateful to them for braving the rain and wind. Picture sales were down or even non-existent – but that’s not what it’s about (is it?). A new venture was the calendar comprising 12 paintings by members of the group. It was popular and sold quickly.
A few copies remain. The "poll" for "the picture you liked best" again aroused intrigue and excitement and that was just among the artists! As before, it was not meant to be a vote for the "best picture" but rather the "favourite picture." Visitors were given a raffle ticket and were asked to write on the back the number of their favourite picture. At the end of the exhibition the tickets were sorted and a "winner" was found. There was a lot of interest and the "contest" was closely fought. This year David Partington’s "Pioneers" – an amazing monocolour of early mountaineers - got the most votes with Mary Vivian’s lovely watercolour of Cradley Village Hall second. Barbara Hilton’s atmospheric watercolour of Ross over the River was third. Well done!
This year the refreshments, tea, coffee and cakes and the traditional bacon butties went down well with the 80 or so who came to see us. We had 54 pictures on display, fewer than last year. That the standard of work was high was a repeated comment. We all certainly seem to have come on.
Mathon Parish Hall is a splendid venue to show off our work and it was a fine display in a lovely setting.
We’ve haven’t held any tutorials this year and that is something to think about for the coming year. The weather restricted painting outside early in the summer but we have had a couple of sessions outdoors on the non-meeting Wednesdays. The average attendance at sessions is around 14 – 15 – a comfortable and happy roomful. We remain a very friendly and supportive group. If you would like to join us, and you will be made very welcome if you do. Come along to a meeting at Storridge Village Hall on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month.

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 10th Anniversary Exhibition at Cradley Village Hall on Saturday, 13th and Sunday, 14th October 2012. It was an historic occasion for us because it was here that our first exhibition was held and the Art Group became firmly established ten years ago.
On the Friday night there was our usual Preview Evening to which we had invited members of the Village Hall Committee, the Rector and his wife and other local dignitaries and friends. Wine and nibbles were served and it was a chance to chat and enjoy each other’s company. There was a lively buzz although we didn’t sell any pictures. Left our wallets behind was the cry! Nevertheless it was a happy and thoroughly enjoyable occasion.
The exhibition was open on both days from 10.30 am until 4.00 pm. Opening for a second day although still something of an experiment is becoming more accepted and we had a good turnout on the Sunday, especially after church was over. Over the 2 days we had some 200 plus visitors through the door including a party of former university graduates of the ‘60s who were having a reunion week at Parkers in Mathon. They had walked across the fields in the bright Sunday sunshine and stumbled on the Exhibition by chance.
The "poll" for "the picture you liked best" aroused much interest and excitement and that was just the artists! As at other exhibitions, it was not meant to be a vote for the "best picture" but rather the "favourite picture." Visitors were given a raffle ticket and were asked to write on the back the number of their favourite picture. At the end of the exhibition the tickets were sorted and a "winner" was found. It generated a lot of interest and the contest was closely fought. Many visitors found difficulty nominating just one favourite and had to be restrained from making multiple entries! This year Bill Scott’s watercolour painting of the Roman Road at Mathon got the most votes with Diana Poole’s Summer 2012 (a delightful comment on this year’s washout summer) was second. June Cutler came third with her picture of a dandelion seedhead. Well done!
The refreshments, tea, coffee and cakes and the now famous bacon butties prepared by Margaret Ainscough, were popular and made it a pleasant outing for all our visitors. We had 75 pictures, a little more than last year. They looked good on the display boards and the walls. Cradley Village Hall was a lovely setting for our work.
A repeated comment was that the standard of work was high. We certainly seem to have matured since those early days. This year we have had excellent day workshops on painting in watercolours from Mariana Robinson, Jonathon Taylor and Geoff Rowswell. The weather restricted painting expeditions into the country but we have had very good sessions at the Wednesday meetings. We remain a very friendly and supportive group. If you would like to join us, and you will be made very welcome if you do, come along to a meeting at Storridge Village Hall starting at 2 pm on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month.

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 9th Anniversary Exhibition at Mathon Parish Hall on Saturday, 22nd and Sunday, 23rd October 2011. It was Storridge’s turn to stage the exhibition but unfortunately, Storridge Hall was not available over the weekend. So Mathon came to the rescue for which we were very grateful! We will be back on track next year with our 10th – yes Tenth! – Anniversary Exhibition to be held where it all started at Cradley Village Hall.
On the Friday night there was our usual Preview Evening to which we had invited members of the Parish Hall Committee, the Rector and his wife and other local dignitaries and friends. Wine and nibbles were served and it was a happy occasion – a chance to chat and enjoy each other’s company. There was a lively buzz and we even sold some pictures!
The exhibition opened on Saturday at 10.30 am and continued until 4.00 pm. And on Sunday we opened from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm. Opening for a second day is still something of an experiment. Last year there wasn’t so much interest on the Sunday. This year, it was a bit better. It was a fine sunny afternoon and there were walkers passing by who were pleased to come in rest, have a cuppa and a bacon butty, and look at our pictures! Indeed, we even sold some pictures to these serendipitous passers-by.
The "poll" for "the picture you liked best" aroused much interest and excitement and that was just the artists! As before, it was not meant to be a vote for the "best picture" but rather the "favourite picture." Visitors were given a raffle ticket and were asked to write on the back the number of their favourite picture. At the end of the exhibition the tickets were sorted and a "winner" was found. It generated a lot of interest and the contest was closely fought. This year Bill Scott’s oil painting of the River Start got the most votes with Wendy Britton’s White Arab second. Both Bill and Wendy are newcomers to our group. Well done!
There was only one craft stall this year but the refreshments, tea, coffee and cakes and the afore-mentioned bacon butties, were popular and made it a pleasant outing for the 100 or so who came to see us. This year we had 71 pictures, a little more than last year. They looked good on the display boards and the walls and the Mathon Parish Hall was a lovely setting for our work.
The standard of work was high was a repeated comment. We certainly seem to have matured since those early days. This year we have had excellent day workshops on painting in watercolours from Jonathon Taylor and Geoff Rowswell. The weather restricted painting outside but we have had very good sessions on the Wednesday meetings. We remain a very friendly and supportive group. If you would like to join us, and you will be made very welcome if you do, come along to a meeting at Storridge Village Hall on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month.

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 8th Anniversary Exhibition at Mathon Parish Hall on Saturday, 23rd and Sunday, 24th October 2010. It was Mathon’s turn to stage the exhibition.
On the Friday night there was our usual Preview Evening. This year we did not invite guests – a decision made for reasons of economy, we late regretted. Although wine and nibbles were served and it was a rather muted occasion! We have since decided that we’ll invite friends and guests in future.
The exhibition opened on Saturday at 10.30 am and continued until 4.00 pm. And on Sunday we opened from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm. Opening for a second day is still something of an experiment. There wasn’t so much interest on the Sunday this year; we’ll give it another chance.
There was only one craft stall this year but the refreshments, tea, coffee and cakes and the afore-mentioned bacon butties, were popular and made it a pleasant outing for the 100 or so who came to see us. This year we had around 69 pictures. They looked good on the display boards and the walls and the Mathon Parish Hall was a lovely setting for our work.

7th ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION OF THE CRADLEY, MATHON AND STORRIDGE ART GROUP
The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 7th Anniversary Exhibition at Cradley Village Hall on Saturday, 24th and Sunday, 25th October 2009.
On the Friday night there was our usual Preview Evening to which we had invited members of the Parish Hall Committee, the Rector and his wife and other local dignitaries. Wine and nibbles were served and it was a happy occasion – a chance to chat and enjoy each other’s company.
The exhibition opened on Saturday at 10.30 am and continued until 4.30 pm. And on Sunday we opened from 10.30 am to 2.30 pm. This latter was something new for this year - a second day. It was an experiment and we were not sure whether there would be enough interest to sustain two days. As it turned out, it was a great success and there was a steady flow of visitors on both days - despite the big wedding which took place at St James church on the Saturday. Parking for that afternoon was difficult to say the least. Nevertheless, people found their way past the wedding party to the Hall.
Another innovation this year was the introduction of a "poll" for "the picture you liked best." It was not meant to be the "best picture" but rather the "favourite picture." Visitors were given a raffle ticket and were asked to write on the back the number of their favourite picture. At the end of the exhibition the tickets were sorted and a "winner" was found. It generated a lot of interest and the contest was closely fought. In the end, David Partington’s picture, Fastnet Race, got the most votes with June Cutler’s Sunset and Margaret White’s Billy Puffin close behind.
The craft stalls were popular and sales made it worthwhile supporting our exhibition. This year we had 55 pictures, a little less than last year. They looked good on the display boards and the walls and the beautiful Village Hall was a lovely setting for our work. Visitors commented on the high standard of work and a good number of pictures were sold.
7 years old – we are growing up and it shows. Our skills have come along nicely. This year we have had an excellent day workshop on painting water in watercolours given by the Forest of Dean artist, Marianna Robinson, which those who attended found very helpful.
Next year, for the 8th Anniversary Exhibition, we hope to be back at Mathon Parish Hall.

6th ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION OF THE CRADLEY, MATHON AND STORRIDGE ART GROUP
The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 6th Anniversary Exhibition at Storridge Village Hall on Saturday, 25th October 2008.
The night before there was a Preview to which we had invited members of the Parish Hall Committee, the Rector and his wife and other local dignitaries. Wine and nibbles were served and it was a very pleasant evening.
The exhibition opened at 10.00 am and continued till 4.00 pm. Margaret Ainscough and Philippa Lowe were in charge of refreshments and served coffee in the morning, followed by lunch and afternoon teas. There were craft stalls supporting our exhibition as well as cakes for sale. We had hung some 60 pictures. They looked good on the display boards and the walls, and the Hall looked very impressive. For this year, Jeff had made for us two racks in which we can put unframed but mounted paintings. This was a new venture and received a lot of interest. Many of the visitors to the Exhibition said what a good standard the work was and a number were sold.
As at last year’s Exhibition, there was a continual buzz of conversation from the constant stream of visitors who enjoyed the exhibition and the chance to meet friends and have a coffee or tea or lunch in pleasant surroundings.
It’s hard to believe that we have been going for 6 years. Once more the old adage, time flies when you’re enjoying yourself, has proved itself. We have been a busy year too. We have had another visit from Carl March who led a two day course at Warner’s Farm and Lower Nupend and we were grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Cutler and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Wynn James for allowing us to paint in their beautiful grounds and, not least, for providing shelter from the inclement weather.
Our numbers remain steady at around 20 and we get regularly 12 to 15 at each session at Storridge Village Hall where we meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month at 2 pm. We have had instruction from Ros Rowberry and other instructors but generally we take it in turns to provide a still life subject for the session. In the summer months, weather permitting, of course, (and it didn’t this year) we have gone to a local site such as Old Country or someone’s garden.
We’re a mixed bunch of all standards with one thing in common. We like to paint or draw! So if you come into that category and would like some company to paint with, then why not join us?
Next year, for the 7th Anniversary Exhibition, we hope to be back at Cradley Village Hall.

5TH ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION
OF THE CRADLEY, MATHON AND STORRIDGE ART GROUP
The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 5th Anniversary Exhibition at Mathon Parish Hall on Saturday, 27th October 2007.
The night before there was a Preview to which we had invited members of the Parish Hall Committee, the Rector and his wife and other local dignitaries. Wine and nibbles were served and it was a very pleasant evening.
The exhibition opened at 10.00 am and went on till 4.00 pm. The Parish Hall Committee served coffee in the morning, followed by lunch and afternoon teas. There were craft stalls supporting our exhibition as well as cakes for sale. We had hung some 52 pictures, little fewer than in previous years. They looked good on the display boards that Jeff had made for us and the Hall looked very impressive. Many of the visitors to the Exhibition said what a good standard the work was and a number were sold.
What was particularly pleasing was the continual buzz of conversation from the constant stream of visitors who enjoyed the exhibition and the chance to meet friends and have a coffee or tea or lunch in pleasant surroundings. Margaret Ainscough told me later that the day raised about £140 for the Parish Hall funds making it a really worthwhile effort.
It’s hard to believe that we have been going for 5 years. It is true, time flies when you’re enjoying yourself. And that’s just what our Group has been doing! It has been a busy year too. We have had a second visit from Carl March who led a two day course at Mathon and Storridge Village Halls. We had good weather and spent the time painting outdoors under Carl’s excellent tutoring.
Our numbers are steady at around 20 and we get regularly 12 to 15 at each session at Storridge Village Hall where we meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month at 2 pm. We have had instruction from Ros Rowberry and other instructors but generally we take it in turns to provide a still life subject for the session. In the summer months we have gone to a local site such as Mathon Churchyard or someone’s garden with a view. Weather permitting, of course!
We’re a mixed bunch of all standards with one thing in common. We like to paint or draw! So if you come into that category and would like some company to paint with, then why not join us?
Next year, for the 6th Anniversary Exhibition, we shall be back at Storridge Village Hall.

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 4th Anniversary Exhibition in Cradley Village School Hall on Saturday 28h October 2006. It has been a busy year again and we were asked to exhibit at Mathon Parish Hall Coffee Morning and took part in the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Storridge Church in August.
In the meantime, we managed to get a number of new paintings finished for the Anniversary Exhibition and which were hung in the very nice setting in the hall of Cradley CE Primary School by kind permission of the Head Teacher, Dawn Hyatt. Geoff White has made some very useful and attractive display boards which we first used at Storridge’s 150th Anniversary earlier in the year. They were used in the School Hall to great effect and our thanks go to Geoff for making them.
We took the opportunity to hold a competition at the School and asked for pictures with the theme, "Them and Us". We had a wonderful response from the children, thanks to the encouragement of their teachers, and the "winners" (they were all winners, but we had to choose our favourites!) from each year are included in the pictures attached. Margaret White and Bill Crouch were invited to Assembly the following week and presented the prizes.
We held a Preview Party on the Friday and a good number of guests from the three parishes and members had an enjoyable evening. The next day the ladies from the Group arranged coffee and biscuits in the morning, a ploughman’s for lunch and teas in the afternoon. There were also craft and Christmas stalls as well as a wood carving demonstration from John Harrison and a sculpting demonstration by Ros Rowberry. There was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day and a happy buzz till closing time. Next year we will be at Mathon.
The photos are by Geoff White and the above words by Bill Crouch.
The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group was formed in August 2002, and meets in Storridge Village Hall on the second and fourth Wednesdays in each month. We now have twenty-four members with attendance around fourteen at each meeting.
We held our first exhibition in Cradley Village Hall, in conjunction with the 2002 Cradley Village Art Challenge, the second in Mathon Parish Hall, and last year at Storridge Village Hall. For this, our 4th Anniversary, we return to Cradley, this time to the school hall.

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) held its 3rd Anniversary Exhibition at Storridge Village Hall on Saturday 15th October 2005. It’s hard to believe that we have going for 3 years. But it’s true: time flies when you’re enjoying yourself. And that’s just what our Group has been doing! It has been a busy year too. We exhibited at the invitation of Mr. Peter Wynn-James at his splendid gallery at Lower Nupend for Cradley Open Gardens Day in June and we also had pictures at the Mathon Parish Hall Open Day in August.
In the little time left, we managed to get a number of new paintings finished for the Anniversary Exhibition and some 68 pictures were hung in the very nice main hall. The new picture rail was just the job and the room looked very attractive when we had finished.
We held a Preview Party on the Friday and a good number of guests from the three parishes and members had an enjoyable evening. The next day the ladies from the Village Hall laid on coffee and biscuits in the morning, a 3 course meal for lunch and cream teas in the afternoon. There were also craft and Christmas stalls as well as a wood carving demonstration. There was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day and a happy buzz till closing time. Next year we will be at Cradley.

The Art Group held its first meeting in August 2002. The year has flown by and the Group is thriving. We regularly have around 14 members turn up for sessions in Storridge Village Hall on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.
We thought that after an active and productive year, we should be able to put on a display of the work we have done. On Saturday, 6th September 2003, the Cradley Village Art Challenge took place and we thought what better occasion could there be to show our work?
On the Friday before the competition, a small band of the members under Ros’ supervision set up the display boards in the Village Hall and hung nearly 80 paintings which 18 artists from the Group had painted in the past year. It was a wonderful effort and showed that the Group was well on the way!
That evening we held a private viewing for the members and their partners with wine and refreshments. Everybody was pleased with the show and John Drummond very nobly photographed every picture under difficult conditions. We thank him for his excellent work. The pictures can be seen below.
The exhibition continued on Saturday during the Art Challenge which some of our members took part, and was on view during the Pub Night. It finished on Sunday midday when the pictures and boards were taken away. Everyone agreed that it had been a great success and many visitors were impressed with the standard we achieved.
So there we are - till next year when I’ve no doubt the 2nd Anniversary Exhibition will be bigger and better still!

The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (CMSAG) first met in August 2002. Around 17 people interested in painting and drawing came to the inaugural meeting in Storridge Village Hall. After a discussion about what we wanted from an Art Group, we got on with what we were there for - painting. Some of us stayed in the Hall painting still life - there was a choice of flowers or an arrangement of china - and the rest went outside (it was a glorious sunny afternoon) and painted views of Storridge Church. The time flew by and all were reluctant to pack up at 4 p.m.
A fortnight later a similar number turned for a lesson in drawing techniques from Ros Rowberry. Ros has since run a series of teach-ins from drawing trees in a landscape, perspective, buildings, to painting our village churches and has given us a huge amount of encouragement.
And so we have continued with sessions in Storridge Village Hall at 2pm on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month The level of interest in painting in our 3 villages is high and the enthusiasm all we could wish. We offer an opportunity for everyone interested in painting or drawing, at whatever level of proficiency, to meet and share their experiences and know-how, but above all, to paint together.
Ros’ excellent monthly tuition classes continue. At the other sessions, we are free to paint as a group either in the Hall or at some outside venue such as Great Whitley or up on the Hills (when the weather allows). Last Wednesday, 28th May 2003, we spent the afternoon in and around Cradley churchyard (see pictures). The weather was kind and Ros was there to encourage and help. The photographs by John Drummond show our members at work and enjoying themselves.
So, if you have always wanted to paint or draw but you’re worried what your friends and family may think, or you have no confidence in your ability to put pencil to paper, why not give it a try? We are a friendly group of all levels of ability. We meet so that we can paint and enjoy it as I am sure you will too. See you there?
WJ Crouch, June 2003
